Back from a Loooong Break
Whoa! I can't believe it's been so long since I posted here. I got so busy last year with the Florida Writers Association Conference that I decided to forget posting for awhile. I fully intended to get back into the habit after the conference in November. I don't know what happened, but I guess I just kept finding one excuse after another. And now it's been a year!
As for the tutoring business, things have gone very well. I ended this last school year with six other tutors, and a full schedule for nearly all of us. The summer has been pleasantly slow, but the new school year promises to be busier than ever. I'm excited that I have a new tutor who will help me with test prep--especially SAT and ACT. She can also help with math students. Yeah!
The running is going well this year. I finished Little Rock, AR and Long Branch, NJ this year, bringing my state count to 22. My next one is Crater Lake, OR in August. I'd like to get the count to 25 (halfway) by the end of this year. Then I'll work on five at a time, in hopes that I might actually finish the states. I'm training harder for Crater Lake than I have in several years, including speed work and hill work during the week. The course there begins at well over 7000 ft, and is very hilly. And there's a time limit, although I've been reassured by the race director that I won't be pulled from the course. The magic mark I'm trying to meet is to make it to 22 miles in 5.5 hours.
My writing has taken third place to tutoring and running, although I'm trying to raise its priority. A writing friend and I are taking an online writing class--something I seem to need to get me motivated. I'm working on a new, short piece for the class. I'm also trying to make progress on my memoir about running, The View from the Back of the Pack.
The best books I've read recently are Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam, and Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich. I've heard for some time that Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is fun to read, and I heartily agree.
